Libertine Saint asked:
Is it the size of the group?
Is it the newness?
I mean no offense here but,
Was Jesus a cult leader when he broke away from Judaism?
Was Mohammed a cult leader in the early days of Islam?
Was Mormonism a cult when Brigham Young and Joseph Smith started the religion?
What about the Jehovah’s Witnesses?
Do you think that whatever religion you do not believe in is a cult?
Again, I don’t mean any offense, but I am really curious about how people define the differences.
However, I am not interested in the Wikipedia definition.

anytime a strong leader is worshiped it is a cult and a cult is not necessarily bad but can become a religion over time. Brigham Young was a cult leader just as Jesus was but Young murdered people and as far as i can tell Jesus never did.

It is the number of members and the very definition of ‘myth’ describes any religion, including Christianity, exactly

Any religious group that asks you to suspend your own independent thinking and asserts that they and only they have all the answers is a cult.
Any religious group that thinks non-members are a mere sub-category of human beings is a cult.
Any religious group that totally disregards science is a cult.

Hello Scout,
I know it’s impolite to answer a question with a question but I think it answers yours perfectly.
What is the difference between a terrorist and a freedom fighter?
= Victory!
If the cult gathers enough popular support then it is accepted into the mainstream.
In the UK funding is available from government for religious denominatory schools, can you imagine, taxpayers money divvied up to brainwash school children – it’s shameful!
Of course everything was fine when we were just subsidizing Catholic brainwashing, but now we have Muslims saying “we pay our taxes too, we want to brainwash our children, why can’t we have some taxpayers money?”
Got to hand it to them, they have a point, they do pay their taxes just the same!
So, next, the witches, the Jews, the Hindu’s, Sikhs, why not, do they not all pay tax?
I have a thing about France, something about “We surrender” – please help! and then a forget-full repose.
Putting that aside for a moment, they have it spot on, brain wash your kids in your own time and with your own money, it ain’t happening in our schools – Vive la France!!!
Good luck & healthy regards,
Brian.

I’m a Christian and I don’t think other religions are cults.
I think cults are groups of people who kill people or hurt people for no reason. Other religions just teach spirituality in different ways but they aren’t dangerous.
Only people who **** and want to kill people are dangerous.
I don’t care what they believe, that to me qualifies a cult.
I know many others think that Christianity would qualify because of certain people’s behaviors, but those are clearly extremist who are horrible and aren’t true Christians if you ask me.
By that logic all Americans are apart of a cult because of the people who kill others for no good reason and call it “patriotism.”

I believe that the difference between a religion and a cult is NOT the size, but the danger.
Cults tend to have a charismatic leader who gathers the followers in a bit of a mind control situation. The rules don’t apply to the leader, but only to everyone else. A cult doesn’t encourage others to read or study the Bible, it encourages that this leader who may be a “god-man” or “bagwan” be the only one to “explain” what the scriptures say. It may involve scriptures that are NOT the Bible, but some other text.
Essentially cults ask you to turn over your lives to someone else. To abdicate your own personal responsibility for your own life. Some people find cults VERY appealing for this very reason. They don’t WANT the job of being responsible for their own actions.
A religion will not do this. A religion stresses personal accountability. True religion stresses accountability to God, and to one’s own personal conscience, but not to some man.
