Is atheism and atheists seen as a threat to religion because atheists have more faith in themselves?
Thor C asked:
Does religion and those who are religious, see atheists as a threat because atheists don’t need religion to guide their lives and decisions? Or that atheists are not under their “control” and “influence” because they do not fear damnation, fear of god or gods and such?

it seems it falls under option B, they fear those that aren’t under mind-control

They fuel one another.

If Christians – who outnumber atheists by around 100:1 globally – are threatened by atheists, we’ve got them where we want them.

I dont see how I’m a threat to religion being as I dont believe in it.
You’re free to believe what you want – hows that threatening?

many atheists **** religion, my theory is that it stems from overbearing religious parents.
which is not to say many religious people dont **** atheists.

There are lots of people who believe in a religion, and don’t use it to guide thier lives. Nor do they all feel threatened. Stop lumping people together because a few outspoken ones seem that way.

People not under control are dangerous.

The idea of free thinking is so alien that it becomes fear.

That depends on how you define religion. I can only answer this from a personal perspective… I am not “religious” but I do love and follow Jesus… and I can say that I do not see atheists as a threat to my ability to do so… it actually makes me really sad to see so many amazing people who don’t know Jesus. But no I don’t feel that they are a “threat”. They are people who should be loved like everyone else.

Not at all.
Faith in yourself is the first and most important faith.
Not all people who follow a religion are being controlled, or influenced by some dominant religious theology with a damnation complex.
One of the most ridiculous christian assertions is that everyone who does not believe as they do is wrong.
Don’t be “christian” in your atheism.

I think you hit the nail on the head! I think another think is that Believers know they look stupid with the evidence Atheists have. They despise us for that. They would rather live in their daydream, believing in skyfairies.

Atheist are no threat as long as the refrain from infringing on the rights of the Christian community.
Atheist hope and trust they are correct in their decision to deny God as existing, because they refuse to live their life in obedience and submission to a Creator…
The sad thing is, that these folks are gambling their souls 100% that there is no God, and no margin for error.
I SEE NOW WHY MANY ATHEIST HAVE TROUBLE GETTING A PEACEFUL NIGHTS SLEEP.

that’s a really interesting point of view, and it’s certainly correct

Wow, how silly and ignorant!!!
ATHEIST – someone who does not believe in a God – any God – not just the Christian one. But that does not mean they do not hold strong moral or religious beliefs! They can follow any religion that does not have a god and there are a lot of those!!
Great ones like BUDDHISM – Religious teaching from Buddha and his followers that by destroying greed, hatred and delusion (the cause of all suffering) man can attain perfect enlightenment!!
Christians are the only religion that see atheists as a threat and that is because their faith is too weak to exist with alternative ideas available!!

Freud suggested that the truly strong person is one who doesn’t need gods or religion. I totally agreed with this in my day but it made me overly proud of myself and it made me think that i was better than the religious, and stronger. This kind of arrogance isn’t good for anyone. Religion makes people humble and i don’t see a problem in that.
Think about all the good things religion brings out in people: love, compassion, humility, charity, hope etc. How can religion be the enemy when it makes people love eachother (in most cases).
Think about the time Lisa Simpson knew the truth about Jebediah Springfield and she had the opportunity to tell everyone, but she didn’t because she found the myth gave people hope. What’s wrong with hope? As long as that hope doesn’t impend on anyone else’s safety and beliefs then what’s wrong with it?
If religion is the “sigh of the oppressed creature” then why would you want to take it away from them? Would you take food away from a starving child?

One time I heard a bunch of people discussing how they’re afraid of atheists because we have nothing to stop us from doing bad things, no fear of god. I don’t think that all Christians or religious people in general fall into this category, but some people just fear what they don’t understand. They don’t seem to understand that I, as an atheist, don’t “sin” or do horrible things because I have morals, not just because I’m afraid of punishment. Personally, I think this is actually more honorable, to do the right thing because it is right, than to just not do the wrong thing because you don’t want to spend eternity in hell. “Believers” sometimes pity atheists because they think we will go to hell for not believing in god, and that’s kind of annoying, but some are so judgmental as to think that we are something to be feared because they think we have no morals (somebody actually told me this), and that’s much worse.

I am a Christian and I do not feel threatened at all. My opinion is that everyone is entitled to live their life how they want as long as it is not threatening other’s rights. Christianity is not meant to be a form of mind control or any other type of control. God does not force himself on anyone. God is not a ****** and Christians should behave likewise.
